Crude benzene refinement by hydrogenization

The institute combined three techniques -- low temperature crude benzene hydrogenation, N-formyl morpholine extraction, and N-formyl morpholine synthesis -- to develop its own complete crude benzene refinement by hydrogenization process.. It built a 25kt/a demonstration unit for crude benzene refinement by hydrogenization, which began production at the Tianyi (Neijiang) Chemical Co Ltd, in Nov. 2006. All its technical indices meet design requirements. It has been operating for almost a year, with stable product quality, and can continue over the long term. The institute has applied for Chinese patents on the "Benzene and Methyl Benzene Recovery" method, and "Production of Refined Benzene from Coked Benzene by Hydrogenization, Desulphurization, and Denitrogenation" process.

Its crude benzene hydrogenation refining process is mature, reliable, simple, and optimal in process flow, with low energy consumption, low investment cost, high product quality (pure benzene, methyl benzene, and xylene at the petrochemical level), high yield ratio, and low pollution. The process is among the best in China and in the world.

The PSA Institute’s crude benzene hydrogenation refining process has the following:

2.Since the coked crude benzene is treated before it goes into the hydrogenization system, heavy impurities that are poisonous to the hydrogenation catalyst are eliminated, improving the life-span and regeneration cycle of the catalyst, and simplifying the vaporization of the hydrogenization materials.

3.The evaporator in the hydrogenization system uses the PSA Institute’s own one-stage evaporation technique, simplifying the evaporation process (abroad, three- o five-stage evaporators are usually used); it avoids jamming resulting from coking -- at the 25kt/a Tianyi (Neijiang) installation, no coking or jamming was seen in a year of operations.

4.A unique polymerization inhibitor is added, wherever polymerization and coking may occur, such as in pre-rectification and hydrogenization, so polymerization and coking are avoided, and the system operates stably over the long run.

5.The institute’s special extraction agents (e.g. N-formyl morpholine) are the result of its National Key Program "863" efforts and are efficient, with stable product quality.

6.The rectification procedure is the PSA Institute’s own technique, with unique composite structure and process flow in the extraction and rectification tower, good operating conditions, so investment costs are lower and energy consumption is reduced.

7.The "three wastes" (wastewater, waste gases, and residue) are treated and the discharge meets standards.
